Solidarity Activities

On July 5th 2006, the Venezuela Solidarity Network launched a public campaign to stop the distribution of the video game “Mercenaries 2: World in Flames”, the game that depicts the virtual invasion of Venezuela, the overthrow of the government, the destruction of major Venezuelan cities and rural areas, and the takeover of the oil industry. This week marks the anniversary of the events known as the "Caracazo", where the government of President Carlos Andrés Pérez called on the army to put down a mass uprising. HoV London has organised a screening of the film documentary "Llaguno Bridge, keys to massacre", dealing with these events.

Hands off Venezuela Denmark has organised a speaking tour with Patrick Larsen, an eyewitness to the revolutionary events in Venezuela. To date four meetings have been organised across the country with three more planned for this week.

First ever meeting on Bolivarian revolution held in Luxemburg. At the end of the meeting left and trade union activists committed themselves to building solidarity with the Venezuelan Revolution.

On Tuesday the HOV delegation that went to Venezuela during the December elections, showed video-clips and slides from their visit and spoke about their experience. The most striking part was their visit to the Sanitarios Maracay factory now being run by the workers after they occupied it back in November. John McDonnell MP and Alan Woods, founder of the HOV campaign, were among the main speakers, as was the Venezuelan Ambassador, Alfredo Toro Hardy.

With a slight delay we have received this report of the visit of Ruben Linares to Belgium. He met with workers on picket lines, at trade union branch meetings, youth and others. Wherever he went he was warmly welcomed with workers showing a keen interest and support for the struggles of the Venezuelan workers.

We welcome the recent decisions of Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez to ask for an Enabling Law that will allow for the renationalisation of all privatised companies. This represents a reversal of the economic policies followed by most governments around the world.

HOV Belgium participated in organising a large meeting of some 350 people in solidarity with the Venezuelan Revolution. With a packed agenda, important speakers from both Belgium and Venezuela spoke on the revolution and the need for solidarity.
