The President of Venezuela will not just be speaking to the political leaders of Europe but will also be speaking with the workers and youth of Austria.

Given the size of the meeting hall when President Chavez is to speak on Sunday many people have not been able to reserve a place. This is very unfortunate given the enormous interest in the President’s visit. As a result, HOV is organising a series of rallies to welcome the President at certain locations. If you have a place or not at the Sunday meeting, why not come and still show your solidarity at these events.

The Hands Off Venezuela Campaign has been officially informed that after many changes of plan, it has just been confirmed that President Chavez of Venezuela will be speaking at a public meeting organised by the Greater London Authority in London at 3pm on Sunday.  As a solidarity organisation, HOV has been allocated some 100 places.

On May 7, the Greek Hands Off Venezuela! committee, together with the German group Network Cuba and the Marxist journal Marxistiki Foni, organised an important seminar on the Bolivarian Revolution. Close to 300 people turned up making the event an important step in strengthening solidarity work in Greece.

The Bolivarian revolution has struck a chord in the hearts of the left in Flanders. During Easter weekend the Belgian Hands Off Venezuela campaign together with other left groups scored a great success for a joint solidarity initiative with more than 130 paying visitors present.

On May 4th 2006, Jorge Martin, Hands Off Venezuela International Campaign Secretary, spoke in Edmonton, Alberta as a part of his speaking tour in Canada and the US. This event was jointly organized by the New Democratic Youth of Alberta (NDYA) and Fightback (www.marxist.ca).

In Blackpool over the May Day Bank holiday, the British shop workers’ union USDAW, representing some 330,000 workers, passed a resolution unanimously supporting the Venezuelan Revolution and affiliating to the Hands Off Venezuela Campaign.

President Chavez will be the major speaker at a Hands off Venezuela and Cuba event which will take place at the “Arena” in Vienna, Austria this Friday, May 12. Together with Chavez, Alan Woods (founder of the international Hands Off Venezuela campaign), Ruben Linares (one of the national co-ordinators of the UNT, Venezuela) and Aleida Guevara (the daughter of Che Guevara) will be addressing the meeting.

President Hugo Chavez is planning to visit London at the invitation of Mayor Ken Livingstone on Monday and Tuesday 15/16 May. "This will be a fantastic occassion”, stated Jorge Martin, the international secretary of Hands Off Venezuela. "This visit by Hugo Chavez will bring Venezuela up the political agenda and give a tremendous boost to the solidarity campaign."

Hands Off Venezuela made a very good intervention in May Day. At the beginning of the march in Clerkenwell, a large stall was set up behind a massive HOV banner selling literature and t-shirts. The new HOV magazine was on sale throughout the demonstration.
