Human Rights Activist from Venezuela to Speak in Marin Print

Lisa Sullivan, visiting the Bay Area from Venezuela, will be the guest speaker at a fundraising dinner for future Task Force on the Americas delegations. Her topic will be "Latin American Democracies Challenge the Washington Consensus.

The event will be held on Thursday, June 19, 6:30 PM, at the Redwoods Presbyterian Church, 110 Magnolia Avenue, Larkspur. A $10-20 per person donation is requested

Ms. Sullivan is currently the coordinator for the Latin American initiative of School of the Americas Watch. As a Catholic Maryknoll lay missioner who moved to Venezuela over 20 years ago, Lisa worked much of the time in the poor “barrios” in the city of Barquisimeto. Her work focused on the youth of the communities in a project called “Movimiento Cultural San Juan,” which promoted traditional Venezuelan music and dance. She is the founder of a leadership formation center, “Centro de Formacion Rutillo Grande,” which sponsored workshops for hundreds of community leaders. Lisa has been a guest several times on President Chavez’ Alo Presidente TV program and was an enabler in the decision of Chavez to stop sending Venezuelan troops to the School of the Americas in Ft. Benning, GA. Ms. Sullivan has led several Task Force delegations in Venezuela

She will be accompanied by two of her children, Maia and Pachi, both of whom were born and raised in Venezuela, and they will answer questions about what it is like growing up in Latin America
