The early origins of International Women’s Day are closely linked to the struggle of women textile workers. This year’s International Women’s Day finds 240 textile workers, mainly women, occupying the premises of the Sel-Fex company in Caracas. Their struggle is no longer just a struggle against the bosses for concrete demands, but a struggle to defend the Bolivarian revolution and to build a better future for Venezuelan working women and all working people in general.

On Saturday, February 25th a meeting of representatives of the workers in factories that have been expropriated or are occupied took place in the premises of Inveval, in El Carrizal, not far from the Venezuelan capital Caracas. Dozens of workers took part in the meeting, the main aim of which was to set up a national Revolutionary Front of Occupied Factories.

Chavez accused Manuel Rosales, the governor of the Venezuelan state of Zulia, of seeking secession for his state, with support from the U.S., in an effort to destabilize the country. Rosales, though, strongly denied the accusations.

A very successful meeting with 70 attendants took place in Brighton on Thursday March 2. The meeting was organised by “Hands off”, which is a group based in Brighton that aims to support activists.

As we reported on this website, the Hands Off Venezuela campaign together with the Venezuela Solidarity Campaign protested against the recent attacks on Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez by Prime Minister Tony Blair, and issued a protest letter addressed to him. Now VSC produced a video about the protest outside the Venezuelan consulate, which you can see on their website.

"Perhaps the most important thing is that the revolution is happening all over the country and is being carried forward not by the officials and bureaucrats but the ordinary people who through a massive effort of will and as an expression of love, conviction and belief are making these things happen."
